Wall Installation Guide - Polished Smooth Finish

Wall Installation Guide - Polished Smooth Finish

This guide covers the application of Ecoflor® Micro Concrete on internal and external wall surfaces to achieve a premium polished or raw concrete aesthetic. The system uses Ecoflor® 300 Cement as a smooth base coat followed by Micro Cement as the finish coat. Suitable for both trades and confident DIYers.

Practice first. Before tackling your walls, run through your technique on a piece of cement sheet. Get comfortable with the mix consistency and trowel method — a smooth, polishable finish requires clean, consistent application.

1

Surface preparation

The wall must be structurally sound, clean, and free from contaminants. The surface should be paint-ready before application begins.

  • Sand the surface with 60–80 grit sandpaper to remove loose paint and smooth imperfections.
  • Wash down with clean water and a sponge to remove residual dust. Allow to dry completely.
  • For plasterboard or panel joints, tape all joints with fibre tape and apply a suitable joint compound per building regulations. Proper joint treatment is essential to prevent cracking after application.
  • Remove any peeling paint, adhesives, sealers, or other contaminants that could affect adhesion.
2

Mask adjacent structures

Remove internal doors if applicable. Apply 50mm painter's masking tape along all adjacent surfaces — architraves, skirting boards, cabinetry, and flooring. Cover all adjacent horizontal surfaces for protection.

3

Prime — Blocca Rete

Apply one coat of Blocca Rete to the prepared wall using a paintbrush or roller. Ensure even, full coverage with no missed areas.

Allow to dry thoroughly — approximately 3 hours — before proceeding.

Blocca Rete is the critical bonding layer for this system. Do not skip or substitute this step.

4

Base coat — 300 Cement

Ecoflor® 300 Cement with fine aggregate creates a smooth, durable base coat for the Micro Cement finish. Coverage: up to 24m² per 15KG bucket when applied thinly at 0.3mm.

Only mix what you can apply within 30 minutes. Reduce this time on warmer days.

Ingredient Full batch (per 15KG) Per 1KG
Clean water 1.6 litres ~105ml
Concrete Modifier 1.6 litres ~105ml
Liquid Colour Pigment 200ml (1 container) proportional
300 Cement powder 15KG 1KG

Colour mixing tip: Add the full 200ml pigment container to the entire liquid batch and stir until evenly combined. Then measure out the required volume of coloured liquid proportionate to the cement powder being mixed — e.g. 630ml per 3KG of 300 Cement.

Mixing method: Combine Concrete Modifier and water 1:1. Add the full 200ml colour pigment container to the entire liquid batch and stir until evenly combined. Then measure out the required volume proportionate to the cement powder being mixed. Gradually add the cement powder while mixing continuously with a high-torque drill and metal high shear paddle stirrer. Blend for 2–3 minutes until a creamy, smooth consistency is achieved.

Application: Apply a thin, even coat by trowel. Work in manageable wall panels. Keep the coat as consistent and smooth as possible — this is a base for the Micro Cement finish, so surface quality matters. Avoid build-up at edges and internal corners.

Allow to dry — approximately 6–8 hours.

Important: Do not add liquid to rehydrate a stiffening mix — this will alter the colour. Remix with the paddle stirrer to soften it.

5

Sand and re-prime before finish coat

Using an orbital sander with dust extraction, lightly sand the dried base coat with 80–100 grit sandpaper to remove any surface imperfections. Use a sanding block along edges and corners.

Remove all dust, then apply Ecoflor® Concrete Modifier diluted 20–30% in clean water using a brush or roller. Allow to dry — approximately 60 minutes — before applying Micro Cement.

Next-day application of Micro Cement is optional but allows the base coat to cure more fully, which can improve adhesion and final finish quality.

6

Finish coat — Micro Cement

Ecoflor® Micro Cement produces an ultra-smooth, polishable finish over the prepared 300 Cement base coat. Coverage: approximately 3m² per kg — up to 30m² per 10KG bucket.

Only mix what you can apply within 30 minutes.

Ingredient Full batch (per 10KG) Per 1KG
Clean water 1.6 litres ~160ml
Concrete Modifier 1.6 litres ~160ml
Liquid Colour Pigment 200ml (1 container) proportional
Micro Cement powder 10KG 1KG

Colour mixing tip: Add the full 200ml pigment container to the entire liquid batch and stir until evenly combined. Then measure out the required volume proportionate to the cement powder being mixed — e.g. 640ml per 2KG of Micro Cement.

Mixing method: Combine Concrete Modifier and water 1:1. Add the full 200ml colour pigment container to the entire liquid batch and stir until evenly combined. Measure out the required volume and gradually add Micro Cement powder while mixing continuously. Blend for 2–3 minutes until a smooth, creamy consistency is achieved.

Application: Apply a thin, tight coat by trowel. Work in consistent wall panels, maintaining even pressure and coverage. Avoid build-up at edges and corners. The smoother the application, the better the final polished result.

Allow to dry — approximately 4–6 hours.

Important: Do not add liquid to rehydrate a stiffening mix — this will alter the colour. Remix with the paddle stirrer to soften it.

7

Sand before sealing

Lightly sand the surface with 120–180 grit sandpaper for a smooth, even finish. Progress to 180–240 grit for a higher polish if desired.

Remove all dust with a dry cloth before sealing.

The finer the grit used at this stage, the higher the polish level of the final sealed surface. Take your time — this step has a significant impact on the final appearance.

8

Seal

Sealing protects the surface, locks in the colour, and provides durability and stain resistance. Apply sealer no earlier than 8 hours after completing the Micro Cement coat.
