Wall Installation Guide - Textured Finish

Wall Installation Guide - Textured Finish

This guide covers the application of Ecoflor® 600 Cement on internal and external wall surfaces to achieve a deep, characterful textured finish. The system uses two coats of 600 Cement over Blocca Rete primer — the first coat creates a solid base, and the second coat is worked with a texture tool while still workable to create your desired surface pattern. Suitable for both trades and confident DIYers.

Practice first. Before tackling your walls, run through your texturing technique on a piece of cement sheet. The texture tool must be used while the material is still workable — practice will help you develop a consistent, confident pattern.

1

Surface preparation

The wall must be structurally sound, clean, and free from contaminants. The surface should be paint-ready before application begins.

  • Sand the surface with 60–80 grit sandpaper to remove loose paint and smooth imperfections.
  • Wash down with clean water and a sponge to remove residual dust. Allow to dry completely.
  • For plasterboard or panel joints, tape all joints with fibre tape and apply a suitable joint compound per building regulations. Proper joint treatment is essential to prevent cracking after application.
  • Remove any peeling paint, adhesives, sealers, or other contaminants that could affect adhesion.
2

Mask adjacent structures

Remove internal doors if applicable. Apply 50mm painter's masking tape along all adjacent surfaces — architraves, skirting boards, cabinetry, and flooring. Cover all adjacent horizontal surfaces for protection.

3

Prime — Blocca Rete

Apply one coat of Blocca Rete to the prepared wall using a paintbrush or roller. Ensure even, full coverage with no missed areas.

Allow to dry thoroughly — approximately 3 hours — before proceeding.

Blocca Rete is the critical bonding layer for this system. Do not skip or substitute this step.

4

Base coat — 600 Cement (first coat)

The first coat of 600 Cement creates a solid, even base for the texture coat. Applied at 0.6mm grain size, coverage is approximately 20m² per 15KG bucket.

Only mix what you can apply within 30 minutes. Reduce this time on warmer days.

Ingredient Full batch (per 15KG) Per 1KG
Clean water 1.6 litres ~105ml
Concrete Modifier 1.6 litres ~105ml
Liquid Colour Pigment 200ml (1 container) proportional
600 Cement powder 15KG 1KG

Colour mixing tip: Add the full 200ml pigment container to the entire liquid batch and stir until evenly combined. Then measure out the required volume proportionate to the cement powder being mixed — e.g. 630ml per 3KG of 600 Cement.

Mixing method: Combine Concrete Modifier and water 1:1. Add the full 200ml colour pigment container to the entire liquid batch and stir until evenly combined. Measure out the required volume and gradually add 600 Cement powder while mixing continuously with a high-torque drill and metal high shear paddle stirrer. Blend for 2–3 minutes until a creamy consistency is achieved.

Application: Apply a thin, even coat by trowel. Work in manageable wall panels ensuring consistent coverage. This coat should be as flat and even as possible — it forms the foundation for the texture coat. Avoid build-up at edges and internal corners.

Allow to dry — approximately 6–8 hours.

Important: Do not add liquid to rehydrate a stiffening mix — this will alter the colour. Remix with the paddle stirrer to soften it.

5

Sand and re-prime between coats

Using an orbital sander with dust extraction, lightly sand the dried base coat with 80–100 grit sandpaper to remove any surface imperfections. Use a sanding block along edges and corners.

Remove all dust, then apply Ecoflor® Concrete Modifier diluted 20–30% in clean water using a brush or roller. Allow to dry — approximately 60 minutes — before applying the texture coat.

6

Texture coat — 600 Cement (second coat)

The second coat is applied at approximately 1mm thickness and worked with a texture tool while still workable to create the desired surface pattern. Coverage is approximately 15m² per 15KG bucket at 1mm thickness.

Only mix what you can apply and texture within 30 minutes. Work in smaller sections on warmer days.

Ingredient Full batch (per 15KG) Per 1KG
Clean water 1.6 litres ~105ml
Concrete Modifier 1.6 litres ~105ml
Liquid Colour Pigment 200ml (1 container) proportional
600 Cement powder 15KG 1KG

Mix using the same method as Step 4.

Application: Apply the coat evenly by trowel at approximately 1mm thickness. While the material is still workable, use the Ecoflor® texture tool to create your desired pattern. Work consistently across the wall panel — the texture should be applied before the material begins to set.

Work in manageable wall sections. The texture tool must be used while the material is still workable — if the material has begun to firm up, do not attempt to texture as it will tear rather than pattern cleanly. Mix smaller batches if needed to maintain workability.

Allow to dry fully — approximately 6–8 hours.

Important: Do not add liquid to rehydrate a stiffening mix — this will alter the colour. Remix with the paddle stirrer to soften it.

7

Prepare for sealing

Once the texture coat is fully dry, remove all masking tape. Use a steel spatula to knock down any raised edges or dry cement build-up at corners.

Depending on your chosen texture finish, a light sand may be desirable to knock back high points and create a more even surface before sealing. If sanding, use 80–100 grit sandpaper lightly and by hand — avoid power sanding which will flatten the texture pattern. For finishes where the full texture depth is desired, skip sanding entirely.

Remove all dust with a dry brush or cloth before sealing.

8

Seal

Sealing protects the textured surface, locks in the colour, and provides durability and stain resistance. Apply sealer no earlier than 8 hours after completing the texture coat.

Prymaren
Pre-sealer — 1 coat
Ecostar 2K
PU protectant — 1 coat

Apply sealer carefully over the textured surface using a brush or roller — ensure full penetration into the texture pattern for complete protection.

Follow the product Technical Data Sheet for each sealer. Allow full cure of 7 days before normal use.
