MicroCement Wall Surface (Wall Installation Guide)

MicroCement Wall Surface (Wall Installation Guide)

Easy Application Instructions for Microcement on Internal or External Vertical Surfaces.

1. Purpose

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for applying Ecoflor® Micro Concrete to vertical surfaces, creating the appearance of Concrete Walls, Tadelakt Lime, or Venetian Plaster. This trowelled method is ideal for commercial and residential interior and exterior walls.

2. Introduction

Ecoflor® Micro Concrete is a premium, polishable blend of lime and cement render, designed for easy application on walls. Developed in Australia, it transforms existing surfaces efficiently. The substrate must be structurally sound and appropriately prepared to ensure long-term performance.

3. Resurfacing Overview

Ecoflor® Micro Concrete is applied over hardened surfaces. Its polymer-modified lime-cement composition allows for effortless application, making it accessible for both professionals and skilled DIYers. The key requirement is that the surface must be paint-ready before application.

4. Surface Condition Assessment

The substrate should be free of structural defects, peeling paint, or contaminants such as adhesives and sealers. Any necessary cleaning or removal of foreign materials must be completed before applying Ecoflor® Micro Concrete.

5. Panel Joint Treatment

  • Plasterboard or panel joints must be taped to prevent cracking.
  • Fibre tape is recommended for secure joint reinforcement.
  • Apply joint compound suitable for the panel type per building regulations.
  • Proper surface preparation is crucial to prevent cracks from forming post-application.

6. Equipment Requirements

Basic Tools:

  • High torque power drill with variable speed
  • Metal paddle stirrer for low-viscosity cements
  • Measuring jugs and mixing buckets (1L-15L capacity)
  • Trowels, sponge, cleaning brush
  • Orbital sander (120-240 grit sanding screens)
  • Dust extraction vacuum
  • Paintbrushes and microfiber rollers
  • Safety PPE (gloves, dust mask, goggles, work boots)

Consumables:

  • Masking Tape (50mm multi-purpose masking tape)
  • Mixing buckets

Required Products:

  • Ecoflor® 300 Cement (Recommended)
  • Ecoflor® Micro Cement
  • Ecoflor® Concrete Modifier
  • Ecoflor® Liquid Colour Dispersion (200ml)
  • Clear Coat Sealing Compounds

    7. Application Process

    Step 1: Mask Adjacent Structures

    • Remove internal doors if applicable.
    • Apply 50mm painter's masking tape to adjacent surfaces (architraves, skirting boards, cabinetry, etc.).
    • Cover adjacent flooring and horizontal surfaces with protective material.

    Step 2: Surface Preparation

    • Ensure the wall is structurally sound, clean, and free of contaminants.
    • Sand surfaces with 60-80 grit sandpaper to remove loose paint and smooth imperfections.
    • Wash down with water and a sponge to remove residual dust.

    Step 3: Apply Primer Coat

    • Use Ecoflor® Concrete Modifier undiluted.
    • Apply using a paintbrush or roller.
    • Allow to dry thoroughly before proceeding. (60 mins)

Step 4: Mixing and applying the second coat 300 Cement:

The intended purpose of the Ecoflor® 300 Cement with superfine aggregate is to provide a durable surface. It is applied as the base coat in a thin coat with a trowel method. Using this method, a 15KG bucket of 300 Cement can cover approximately 15m2 or 1.0m2 per kilogram. Only mix enough 300 Cement that can be comfortably trowelled out and applied in around 30 minutes. On warmer days this time is reduced.

1st mix the Concrete Modifier with water 1:1 or 50/50

Mix ratio of water and Concrete Modifier for 15kg of Ecoflor® 300 Cement - 1.5 litres of Water mixed with 1.5 litres of Ecoflor® Concrete Modifier. Mix the water and modifier and lightly blend.

Shake well your Liquid Colour Pigment and add to the water and Concrete Modifier mix (Use 1 premeasured 200ml container per each 15kg bucket of Ecoflor® 300 Cement.

Slowly add 15kg Ecoflor® 300 Cement powder whilst continuing to mix as before. Apply to the surface. Let it dry for approximately 6 - 8 hours.

When mixing smaller quantities, use approximately 200 ml of the Concrete Modifier, water, and colour mix per kilogram of cement powder. 1kg should cover around 1m2 if applied thin.

Step 5: Preparation for applying the Finish Coat Micro Cement:

    (Next Day Application is optional)

Using an sanding block or orbital sander with dust extraction. Sand over the whole area (dried base coat) with 80-100 grit sandpaper to remove superfluous knobs and excrescences and clean residual dust.

Use Ecoflor® Concrete Modifier mixed with 20% - 30% clean water. Apply to the surface with a brush or roller. Allow to dry for approximately 60 mins.

Step 6: Mixing and applying the final coat Micro Cement:

The intended purpose of the Ecoflor® Micro Cement is to produce an ultra-smooth surface. It is applied to the base coat in a thin coat with a trowel method. Using this method, a 10KG bucket of Finish Coat can cover approximately 15m2 or 1.5m2 per Kilo. Only mix enough Micro Cement that can be comfortably trowelled out and applied in around 30 minutes. On warmer days this time is reduced.

Apply Micro Cement by trowel on method. We recommend a thin trowel application for the final coat to limit visible surface imperfections.

Mix Micro Cement – 1.4 litres of water to 1.4 litres of Ecoflor® Concrete Modifier and lightly blend then add the 200ml Liquid Colour Pigment and mix well as before. Slowly add 10kg Ecoflor® Micro Cement.

When mixing smaller quantities, use approximately 200 ml of the Concrete Modifier, water, and colour mix per kilogram of cement powder.

      Important Warning:
Do not add any liquid to unstiffen if the mix is curing or setting in the bucket, (doing this would change the colour) just remix with the mixing paddle to soften the mix.

Apply the mixed Micro Cement to the surface using the steel trowels, ensuring complete coverage of the area and trowel on tightly avoiding surface texture. Avoid any unnecessary build up particularly along edges and internal corners.

Allow to dry. Approximately 4 - 6 hours.

Step 7: Sanding (Recommended for Enhanced Finish)

      • Lightly sand the surface for a smooth, mottled effect.
      • Start with 120-grit sandpaper and progress to 180-240 grit for a higher polish.
      • Remove excess dust with a dry cloth before sealing.

Step 8: Apply Clear Coat Sealer

      • Choose between Natural Enhancer (Deep Penetrating) or Prymaren / Ecostar Combination. (Topical Sealer)
      • Follow the Product Technical Data Sheet for application.
